where do you live and why?

with the increased prices of homes these days... why do you live where you do when you can probably find a comarable job elsewhere and buy a much much nice home?

something that costs $250,000 here in south florida is a crap hole. It makes buying a home not even worth the effort or struggle paycheck to paycheck to be able to say you have something to show for it.

I was looking at Jacksonville to compare home prices, and what I found was depressing. For the same price range, you can have a VERY VERY nice house. not only that, it seems like jobs for sean and myself are about at the same salary range.

RE: where do you live and why?

Here's something from a party not heard from in a while:

We just bought a house in Palm Coast. It's about 30 minutes north of Daytona. 1930 sq ft and four bedrooms and two baths. We bought it in January for less than 200,000. We're at the end of a cauldesac(sp?). It's a quite neighborhood. It's a brick house and if I had some pics I would post them, but I'm just too lazy to get the damn camera out.

We bought here because I've got the career here. That and the fact that we're so close to Bike Week stuff and I can go ride the Harley whenever I want. But, it's a nice place to be, kind of reminds me of Vero just before Vero blew up.

We're kind of central to everything. An hour south of Jax, 30 minutes north of Daytona, and an hour away from Orlando, so it's not too bad.

Just wanted to share my input.

This is a huge, complex, and loaded question. I think the answer will be different for everyone. I live where I live because of my child. If I did not have a child....I would not live here. Simple as that!!! I paid slightly under 200k for a townhouse, but I live in one of the best areas of my city. My child goes to a great school, and his friends are good kids.

If you have children to think about then it makes choosing a home that much more difficult. At least it does for me. I have chosen public vs. private education and finding good public schools in any state is becoming more and more difficult.

I also like where I live because of the outdoors, the friendly people and the cleanliness. I loved Florida in many ways, but the beaches and laid-back life could not compensate for the cost of housing/taxes, shitty schools, and miserable people. (At least where we were living).

We must all choose our paradise.....but there are tons of great "paradises." You just have to focus on the few things that are most important to you, and let go of the rest. Jax is a great city if you live in the right part. I know that Orange Park and the surrounding outskirt areas were really great a few years ago. Jax is very spread out with lots of different roads to get places. It's growing fast and jobs should be plentiful.

Personally, I am all about West of the Mississippi.....but that's just me....I need the culture, the people, and the easiness of life on this side. Now if someone could just build me an ocean in the Rockies...I would be so content.

Well, I live on the flip side of this equation. I live somwhere that I could feasibly buy a brand new, nice 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home in a great neighborhood for $160-$175,000. If I wanted to settle for a starter home, yet still new home, I could lower this to $135-$150,000. And I honestly could go out today and find a decent 2 bedroom condo for $115-$120.

But, I have no desire (as we all now know) to live in this area, so the home costs alone won't deter me from leaving. While the home prices are great, I think there is so much more "quality of life" to think about.

Does the area you live offer what you want in the way of friendships, connections, nightlife, indoor/outdoor activities, hobbies, preferred weather patterns (seasons), geography, contentment, etc.?

If not, then you are dealing with lost opportunity cost, which brings down your pay (theoretically) and your quality of life. Meaning, if a place has higher then average housing, yet offers you everything (or most everything) else you want, then its probably worth it.

There are reasons that people are not flocking to live in the midwest or central states. Housing may be extremely affordable, but it does not offer the life benefits alot of people are looking for. Sure, you could get a house dirt cheap, but if you absolutley love the ocean, how fufilling will your life be? And how much would you end up paying to travel to the ocean?

It's a matter of deciding what is important to you.

As for me, I know my next move will be to a place where the average homes will be above $200K...but I've decided that everything else I am looking for will outweight the cost of housing in the long run.

Thanks for listening to my two cents and good luck!

From what I understand the closest thing to an ocean out ther for you guys is Cherry Creek Resevoir. That is if that's still what it's called sinced the last time I lived out there.

Oh and yeah, I'll be in your neck of the woods in about 2 weeks. I'm heading to Lafayette for a few days.

I bought my house for 125k. It is approx 1400sqft. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a 1 car garage. I bought here because the cost of living is relatively low, the schools are good and my family is here.

My answer is going to be super short....

I live in Vero Beach and this place is way over priced!!!! The only reason I live here, is because this is where I was born and raised, and i'm still here because i can't leave this county with my oldest daughter without the permission of her dad, which he won't allow me to move anywhere, although we had discussed going to Georgia and live in separate towns so we can still communicate.....

I honestly don't know anything about costs around here other than the fact that it's ridicously high around here.

It's definitely not easy for a single person to live here.

just the facts please:

1600 ft. 3 bedroom 2 car garage (1/2 was converted in to a den/office.)

pool w/ huge screen in lanai ... nice piece of land ... 103k (yes only 103... got in right before the prices skyrocketed!!)

My reasons :

i moved here to be close to my family (my mother was sick)...

because it was a small country town ...

the schools: the high school has dual enrollment and a IB programme. the elementary school mia is in has been an A+ school 5 years in a roll ... great programs for the kids to get involved with ...

... my inlaws ended up moving right down the street.

the future:

Now that Mikel has to start job hunting he is looking into going out of state. Colorado has come up more then once...

I ended up moving back for my family ...

i am someday moving away for me... someday.

RE: where do you live and why?

I live in Arkansas mainly because it's where my roots are and where my family is and has been for generations.

However...

I also live here and will probably stay here because I love it. The cost of living is MUCH cheaper although salaries can be smaller, the pace of life is slower, I don't have to stand in enormous lines to do ANYTHING (It takes about 10 minutes to get your tags renewed, a few minutes at the doctors office, in and out at E.R., etc.) , people know you and care about you, schools are good, and folks are polite. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's a great place to raise children. The town I live in is small - only about 9k people on a good day. But, it's only about a 45 minute drive to a major city and a 20 minute drive to a moderately sized one. Sure, there isn't a Best Buy or Kinko's down the road and we have to drive 20 minutes to go to a 'fancy' place to eat but it's a small price to pay for loving your lifestyle.

As far as homes go, we bought our 2000 sq. ft, three bedroom, 2 ba., home that has a double tier deck, LARGE lanai (we call 'em screened in porches here, folks.. haha) and a large fenced in back yard in a great neighborhood for $80k. It's not a fancy house but it's a nice one. In Sarasota it would have cost us well over $175k. You can buy a brand new, very fancy house with all the bells and whistles for about $100 - $125.

Having lived in Florida before I wouldn't move back there to live if you paid me.

My two cents.
